Invitation

Sangodare_mark_tiny.png

I write and activate sermons in community by invitation. And I love to do so! I have mostly NOT related to my invitations to preach as commissions. However, in an effort to make visibile the fact that this is an offering people and community accountable organizations can invite me to make to their spaces and journeys I have started to use the language of commissioning. In particular, I am living inside a residencey that I have created for myself during 2020 where I primarily create Sermons, Songs and Invocations. So, this may be the only time I offer this outside of my community. So, if you are interested now is the time to reach out.

I relate to these offerings like a once in a lifetime gift you can give to yourself, a loved one, your community or organization.

For Example: Some may give a trip as a gift to self or another person. Some may give a diamond ring to a loved one by way of proposal. Though I did not propose marriage to my partner, Alexis, I proposed we grow and composed a song as the primary offering. A song titled, I Propose We Grow.

The Process

Invocations

My invocations are basically short sermons that excite and conjure up the energy or reality that the invocation intends. An Invocation can take me a few days to a week to create. It begins with a conversation with whoever I am creating the invocation for, my own meditation and research and then me rehearsing the prayer. I rehears it extensively so that when I am delivering it I am not focusing on the words as much as the energy, the reality we are creating with it. The words are mostly there to give the witnesses and participants in the prayer something to hold on to, something to focus their attention and intention on while I pray/invoke.
...This is an intimate space of collaboration.

Songs

My songs are usually in the genre of gospel, r&b or soul music. They are also inspired by people, situations and needs that show up in or around my life. Most of my songs have come to me as gifts to give loved ones. Because of the time and collaboration it takes for me to compose, notate and record a song, it can take two weeks up to a month.

For songs I just record using my computer, laptop or mobile devices it takes much less resources. However, at this time I am interested in elevating the level of this portion of my practice in terms of the contemplative space I give to my composing and the collaborations I want to do. So, the price and time investment reflects this.

Sermons

The process for creating a sermon for another person or a special occassion begins with a consultaion. Then I go into meditation and research (mindfulness, prayer, reading, divination, consulting with elders and ancestors, etc.) to begin writing the sermon. Once I have written it, similar to the invocation process I rehearse it over and over again, so that when I am sharing it I can be present to what comes to me in the moment and in the space at the same time that I am channeling the energy that the sermon seeks to unlock or tranifest (trasnform + manifest). Sermons are my favorite! BUT! AND! They really take me through because my sermons require ME to have a breakthrough or to look back and understand a past lesson in a new way.

For a commission I either come to your location to deliver the sermon or gather my community to engage and enliven the sermon with me and then we record and document it well and share it with you. Those folks who have commissioned a sermon I think most enjoy coming to Durham, to experience it.
